Sylvian De Bellis
I am a Swiss product and industrial designer that graduated from écal, University of Art and Design, Lausanne in 2013. While undertaking my degree I studied for a semester as an exchange student at the Design Academy of Eindhoven, 2012, where I developed my design practice and sensitivity for conceptual design. The BA at ECAL gave me the platform to challenge, appraise and validate my ideas, founding and developing my design aesthetic and contextual approach. After graduating from écal I interned in London for design studios such as: Philippe Malouin and Lee Broom. I learnt how to embody a project from the research developement, manufacturing process, to its realisation; I learnt how to assist with an interior design project and I worked on the developpement of gigantic sculptural piece installation. After concluding my internships in London, I returned to Switzerland and worked for a year as a junior designer in the La Chaux-de-Fonds based industrial design agency, Multiple SA. Working for large cooperate conglomerates such as Nestlé. I further developed my design practice for the commercial sector, with fundamental focus on designing for the saleable market. The exploration of material is an important starting point for me, working a lot with metal, wood and clay, I take a lot from workshops, working tangibly with materials, finishes and form, trying to solve industrialisation problems by testing and pushing the limits of materials. I am currently in my first year of the Design Products MA at the Royal College of Art, London. Throughout
undertaking this course, I aim to further develop, conceptualise and challenge my practice and design identity, setting me on the path in the hope of opening my own design studio.
