Umut Yamac

Umut Yamac is an architect, designer and maker of kinetic works based in London.

During his architectural career, Umut Yamac was drawn to the design of 1:1 mechanical details and in 2011, he founded his studio to combine this interest with his love of making.

His current body of work can be interpreted as the creation small-scale architectural constructions, combining traditional construction materials such as timber and metal, with more unusual and fragile materials such as paper, clay and seeds. The works vary in scale from domestic objects to designs for public spaces, from permanent pieces to temporary installations.

Many of the themes explored in his work are derived from natural processes, whether these be movement, time or weathering. The quality that unites each piece is the emphasis placed on the relationship with the user; and the desire to offer different levels of engagement, from purely functional to the playful and imaginary.
