To produce these lamps, I use generic lamp cord found at hardware stores and manually separate the two wires and knot them back together. Repeating the underwriter’s knot, commonly used to replace lamp sockets by securing a new socket to the lamp base results in the Knot Lamp. I consider the resulting pattern hanging in space to be a visual representation of electrical current. Bringing attention to electricity, an invisible infrastructure, is something I liken to a metaphor for women’s labor within the home and the history of how that has been both vital and recognized.
